Food Waste

Food waste is a global issue. More than one third of all food across the world is wasted. That’s 330 kg of food per person! This has wide-reaching consequences for animals, people and our planet. The journey from field to fork uses up huge amounts of environmental resources – from deforestation of the rainforest for farming, to transport and processing, right up to freezing and cooling. Food waste is responsible for 10% of global greenhouse gases and significantly contributes to global warming. Apart from its catastrophic effects on our planet, it is also ethically wrong. While rich countries are throwing away edible, valuable food, millions of people are suffering from hunger and dying due to malnourishment. The food thrown away in Europe alone could feed 200 million people.

Chiefs is well aware of the issue, and takes a hands-on approach as a food waste warrior by actively supporting the following organisations.

Tischlein Deck dich

Chiefs regularly donates food that can no longer be accepted in stores due to overproduction or strict rules on best-before dates to the non-profit organisation Tischlein deck dich.

Tischlein deck dich takes a stand against food waste and associated food poverty. While 2.8 million tonnes of perfectly good food are thrown away each year in Switzerland alone, 735’000 people live on or below the breadline in this country. This is where the organisation comes in – they build a bridge between abundance and need. It has been saving food and daily necessities from destruction since 1999, distributing them to over 138 Tischlein deck dich drop-off points and helping 21’000 people in need every week.

SECEND – No room for waste

Chiefs collaborates with SECEND who sell a range of products, including food saved from landfill, at great prices.

SECEND fights against food waste by offering products at amazing discounts in its online shop. By working directly with producers and wholesalers, SECEND manages to save huge amounts of food. Their aim is to make people aware of food waste and encourage the government, the economy and society to rethink their approach. This won’t just increase our appreciation of food, but will also make a significant contribution to better sustainability and climate protection. SECEND creates a win-win-win situation by benefiting customers, partner companies and the environment.

Too Good To Go

We’re happy to announce our partnership with Too Good To Go, which means we are now official partners of their waste warriors app.

Too Good To Go brings together supply and demand in their app, where businesses offer their surplus goods via the app and users benefit from lucrative offers in their area. The app is now available worldwide and has over 5000 partners in Switzerland alone. As well as facilitating the sale of food goods, they also raise awareness of food waste on social media and regularly share useful food-related tips and tricks there.
